Back to School: Tips to Support Your Mental Health

Back to School and Caring for your Mental Health

The back-to-school season can be stressful for parents, filled with excitement, worry, and a lot of adjustments from the summer schedule. It’s important to take care of your mental health during this transition.

Here’s some advice to help you stay balanced:

  1. Prioritize Self-Care: Take time each day for activities that you enjoy and ones that help you relax, whether it’s reading, exercising, or meditating.

  2. Establish a Routine: Set a consistent schedule for yourself, including time for work, relaxation, and self-care. Align your routine with your kids’ school schedule to create a smooth daily flow.

  3. Communicate Openly: Talk with your partner, friends, or support network about any concerns or stresses. Keep the lines of communication open with your kids to understand their needs and emotions during this transition.

  4. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep—rest is crucial for mental well-being. This goes for kids as well.

  5. Stay Organized: Use calendars or apps to keep track of school events, activities, and appointments. Prepare in advance to avoid last-minute stress, like packing lunches or setting out clothes the night before.

  6. Set Realistic Expectations: Understand that it’s okay if not everything goes perfectly. Focus on doing your best rather than trying to be perfect.

  7. Stay Connected: Make time for social activities that keep you connected with other adults. Perhaps a coffee break with a friend, away from your home or office. Or, start a morning or evening walking group.

  8. Practice Mindfulness: To stay grounded, engage in mindfulness activities, such as deep breathing exercises or short meditation sessions. Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings without judgment, allowing yourself to process emotions.

  9. Unplug from Technology: Avoid doomscrolling. Unplug and take time away from your phone to be present.

  10. Seek Professional Help if Needed. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider talking to a therapist or counselor. Don’t hesitate to reach out for support if you need it.

As your kids go back to school, it’s important to prioritize mental health. By being mindful of the stress that comes with the back-to-school season, you can aim to navigate it with a sense of calm and balance, ensuring that both you and your children have a positive and healthy start to the school year.
