Background: Ketamine has been around for decades, pharmaceutical companies had little financial incentive to invest in the research and development to make this generic medication FDA approved for treatment resistant depression, despite the compelling evidence of its efficacy. However, given the obvious benefits of Ketamine as an antidepressant, Johnson & Johnson has pursued a variation of Ketamine, esketamine (Spravato), which is administered intranasally.
What is esketamine? Ketamine is composed of two molecules S-ketamine (esketamine) and R-ketamine in a mixture…. These molecules are chiral enantiomers of each other–meaning these compounds are related just as your left and right hand are related–mirror images of each other.
Will you still provide IV Ketamine Infusions? Absolutely! We have seen tremendous results from IV ketamine since our opening in 2016 and have no plans to discontinuing this form of treatment. While we are excited about this newer version of Ketamine, we still feel that there are many patients that will benefit (or continue to benefit) from IV Ketamine Therapy.
